'NC wants to head all DDC boards' | Party sidelines other PAGD constituents, tries to take credit for victory alone | | Early Times Report jammu, Jan 2: National Conference seems to be in the process of high jacking the Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) and reportedly wants to head most of the District Development Council (DDC) boards in Kashmir. National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah, who also heads the PAGD, while addressing a function in Srinagar had claimed that the results of the DDC elections have proved that how deep rooted his party is. "It was an indication that he was trying to drive home a point that NC is the only party that deserves all the credit," an analyst told Early Times. "Since the day results of the DDC elections have been declared the NC is trying to send a message that it's the only party in Kashmir which has got the footing and other parties don't stand anywhere. It's a message for all the PAGD constituents." It may be recalled that during the recently held DDC polls, the BJP emerged as a single largest party by winning 75 DDC constituencies followed by National Conference with 67 seats. The PDP bagged 27 while the Congress won 26 seats. The newly formed J&K Apni Party (JKAP) won 12 while JKPC and CPI-M bagged eight and five seats respectively. Independents turned out to be key players during these elections, winning 18 percent of the total seats while registering their win on 50 seats. Likewise, JKNPP and PDF managed to win two seats each and BSP emerged victorious on one seat from Kathua district. "The PAGD won 110 seats collectively but the NC after bagging 67 seats is trying to make it clear that the party holds the key and the decision of the NC leadership will be final," an observer said. He said that after the results of the DDC polls were declared, PDP president Mehbooba Mufti went in a "silent mode." "She (Mehbooba) has stopped talking as she has realized that her party has been the biggest loser as the PDP has just managed to get 27 seats." It's in place to mention here that after the DDC polls results were declared, Mehbooba boycotted the PAGD meeting as the speculations were rife that she was "unhappy" with Dr Farooq and Omar Abdullah, who have ostensibly sidelined her. "The PAGD looks more like an extended wing of the National Conference as other parties have not been given any big role," the observer added. He said, "More drama will unfurl in coming days as there are reports that NC is demanding that boards in most of the districts should be headed by the NC DDC members." |
