People of village Chandali without electricity since last 10 days | Villagers dragged transformer on their own, shifted it to nearest road point | | ASIF IQBAL NAIK EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Jan 3: The poor condition of the transmission and distribution system in Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir is hurting the people during ongoing winter as the people of village Chandali in Sarthal area of Kishtwaf District are without electricity since last over 10 days. As per the details available with Early Times, the transformer installed at village Chandali some 35 KM from District Headquarter Kishtwar developed a fault as a result of which the locals demanded its immediate replacement. Since the department lacks manpower, the people on their own shifted the damaged transformer amid snowfall to nearest road point as it is very difficult for the vehicle to reach the site where the transformer had been installed as due to accumulation of the snow on muddy road slippery condition prevails. The people told the Early Times that over a dozen people carried the damaged transformer on their shoulders to several kilometres so that they could replace it with a new transformer. The people said that despite the lapse of over 10 days, the department failed to provide the replacement of the said transformer and called upon the authorities to immediately provide them the transformer with enhanced capacity so that people could not suffer due to non-availability of electricity in the village. Speaking to Early Times, senior official in Power Development Department said that bad weather and non-availability of the transformer with high capacity become the cause of delay for restoration of the electricity. “25 KV transformer has been installed at village Chandali. Now the people are demanding 63 KV transformer which is not available and same is being arranged,” said the official who hail the support of general public in shifting the damaged transformer. He said that the people refused to carry the 25 KV transformer as replacement and instead insisted to replace it with 63 KV transformer, the demand which is being looked into. The official said that if the weather condition allows, the village will get electricity in next two days. “We have dearth of linemen in the department since there is no fresh recruitment since years while many employees retired from the department,” the official added and assured the people that new transformer with enhanced capacity will get installed in the village on priority basis.
