Bonhomie hits dead end | | | Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD)—an amalgam of Kashmir centric parties—seems to have disintegrated after the Peoples Conference pulling out from it. The PC led by Sajad Gani Lone divorced the amalgam comprising National Conference, Peoples Democratic Party and few other smaller parties after leveling serious allegations about the alliance partners fielding proxy candidates in the recently held District Development Council (DDC) elections. At present the PAGD is about NC and PDP only. There are reports that both the parties are trying to woo the independent candidates in Kashmir for the forthcoming elections for the DDC chairpersons. It appears that both these parties want to form the boards on their own. The PAGD has crumbled under its own weight just few months after it was constituted. The amalgam was given a formal shape after PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti was released from 14 month detention last year. She had played a pivotal role to bring NC and other parties on a common platform. When the PAGD was formed Mehbooba had claimed that the amalgam’s aim is not power and it has been formed to achieve the so-called “bigger cause.” But after the DDC polls were announced the PAGD jumped into the fray and decided to contest these elections collectively. However, the confusion and chaos gripped the conglomerate soon after the party leaders started distributing the tickets among the contestants. In many constituencies the NC and PDP candidates were fighting against each other. The issue of fielding proxy candidates snowballed into a major controversy. The PC pulled out as the NC leaders ignored the issues that were raised by the Sajad Lone’s party. Mehbooba had tried to douse the flames but no one paid attention towards her. As on date the PAGD has lost its significance as the NC and PDP have almost said goodbye to each other without announcing their breakup formally. All the attempts of Mehbooba Mufti to corner New Delhi have ended up in a fiasco. Her party has just won 27 DDC seats. She is left with nothing in her kitty. The PAGD leaders not holding any meet to frame a strategy to elect the DDC chairpersons has proven it beyond doubt that the Kashmir centric parties cannot share a common platform and coming together. These parties were bête-noire and will continue to remain so. |
