Locals of Dungi stage protest against growing bovine smuggling incidents | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
RAJOURI, Feb 10: People from the Dungi area adjacent to the LoC in Rajouri district protested against the Rajouri police for its failure to keep a check on illegal trafficking of bovine animals. Locals joined by Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad activists raised slogans against the cattle smugglers as well as police and blocked the Rajouri’s Kallar Chowk on Rajouri-Jammu highway. The protesters accused the police of negligence, saying that due to the carelessness of the police, the spirits of the cattle smugglers are so high that they steal animals from people's homes and beat them up if they dare to stop. They said that some animal smugglers tried to steal the animals from a house in the Dariya area of Doongi Block two days ago and when the owner stopped them, the smugglers beat him fiercely. Not only this, on Tuesday, the local people informed the police about a carriage full of animals but instead of taking action against bovine smugglers, the police party started beating civilians who had informed it. Hindu organizations have alleged that cattle smuggling is being done due to the involvement of police. They alleged that even after lodging a written complaint to the police, the police only arrested the animal smugglers, but no cases were registered. Later, after nearly 3 hours of vigorous protest, SSP Rajouri Chandan Kohli reached the spot and spoke to the protesters and assured them that strict action will be taken against those who have beaten people and they will be arrested. The SSP assured that more nakas would be put in place to curb animal trafficking.
