EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, Feb 13: In a significant development that can provide a major boost to the tourism sector in Jammu region, figures are suggesting that the tourists are finding Jammu a far safer place to visit than picturesque Kashmir valley.
Official documents in possession of Early Times reveal that since August 5, 2019 when the special status of Jammu and Kashmir was revoked by the central government, Jammu region has received the tourists 100 times more than that of Kashmir Valley.
While since August 5, 2019, as many as 84,326 tourists have visited Kashmir, Jammu has witnessed 100 times more as eighty seven lakh, ninety-four thousand, eight hundred thirty-seven tourists visited the region as per the official documents. Such a figure has revealed how Jammu region so far given far less importance vis-à-vis the tourism infrastructure development, has a tremendous potential and can become a centre for major tourist infrastructure.
There have been numerous occasions when people have hailed the hospitality of the region and how safe it is to roam freely there.
Even PDP President Mehbooba Mufti as the chief minister in the year 2017 hailed Jammu and its people, asserting that the tolerance being exhibited by the Jammu people is worth to hail and that people of Kashmir Valley should seek inspiration from the region to love and live with fellow human beings. “I am telling all of you here that you must have noticed when you reach Jammu you feel a sigh of relief within. There is no fear and no danger to anyone. Everyone can troll around its markets without any fear. See how the education sector in the region is flourishing and how it is touching new heights every day after in the region,” she said.
The then chief minister added that she was dazzled to find Kashmiris roaming free in the Jammu markets and students from Valley seeking coaching there. “I would see girls with headscarves treading fearlessly towards the tuition centres. I saw pheran clad Kashmiris happily moving around the markets of Raghunath Bazaar. Even people from Kashmir go out to watch movies in theatres. I heard azaan along with the hymns of temples and gurduwaras there. Jammu has become a model for a pluralistic society and this is what is needed at this hour- brotherhood, love and respect for other faiths- this is the only way to achieve success and prosperity overall,” Mehbooba Mufti on February 18, 2017 said.
Meanwhile, with tourist arrival spiking in Jammu, there are hopes that the same could provide a boost to the region’s economy in the long run.
