Govt completes verification of 6000 Rohingyas in Jammu | 500 evade police scrutiny, law enforcing agencies launch hunt | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 24: The Jammu and Kashmir Government has completed verification formalities of an estimated 6000 Rohingya refugees, while as around 500 have reportedly evaded the police scrutiny, sources told Early Times on Wednesday. They said that the verification of Rohingyas is almost complete, however, there are still 400 to 500 Rohingyas left whose verification needs to be completed as they have reportedly gone to Hyderabad and West Bengal. The Jammu and Kashmir Government, according to the sources, has taken up the issue of verification with the governments of Hyderabad and West Bengal, seeking from them the assistance to complete the process without further delay. The information pertaining to missing Rohingyas has been given to the governments of these states to verify their credentials. Sources said that currently there are 400 to 500 more Rohingyas whose verification needs to be done. Of these, as per sources, 100 to 200 have migrated to other states, while the rest have migrated from Narwal, Bathindi, Bari Brahmana and Trikuta Nagar to other Rohingya settlements. The CID has started a search operation in the surrounding areas. On the other hand, the number of Rohingyas kept in the sub-jail holding center of Kathua has gone up to 197. In 2017, the government had said that 5,700 Rohingyas and 322 other foreign nationals were living in J&K. In a written reply in the legislative assembly, the government had also said that Rohingyas were living in two districts, Jammu and Samba, and they had come on their own to J&K. As per Home Department records, more than 7,000 Rohingyas have been camping in around 28 localities in Jammu region for the past several years. Most of them have settled in areas that are in close vicinity of vital security installations like Sunjuwan military station or Army camps near Belicharana and other areas. What is alarming is that most of these illegal migrants have managed mobile phone sims, using fake documents to register themselves with the service providers. This is considered to be major security concern. Keeping in view all these developments, many Jammu based political parties and some social organisations had launched sustained campaigns in the past to get Rohangiyas deported. In their view, the presence of these illegal immigrants in the city of temples can be a security threat in near future. More than 13,700 foreigners, including Rohingyas and Bangladeshi nationals, are settled in Jammu and Samba districts, where their population has increased by over 6,000 between 2008 and 2016, according to government data. |
