EARLY TIMES REPORT

UDHAMPUR, Apr 13: The road construction agencies in Garnai village of Udhampur district have damaged the water supply pipes thereby leaving the hamlet waterless for over one and a half year.
The water crisis, triggered by the unplanned work of road construction agencies has now forced the locals of Garnai to walk quite a large distance to get potable water from spring sources, however, these natural sources will soon get dry as the mercury level is soaring with each passing day.
Vikram Singh, Sarpanch Garnai said that three wards of Panchayat Garnai are without tap water for the last one year due to damaged Jal Shakti (formerly PHE) supply pipes.
“Water supply to the Upper Garnai village of panchayat Garnai is completely in tatters from the last one and a half year due to the construction of PMGSY road from Peer Baba at NH 44 to Upper Garnai,” he informed.
“Since then Jal Shakti pipes were damaged leaving Ward 7, Upper Garnai, University Campus at Garnai, Govt Middle School at Upper Garnani and Govt Middle School Kreya to suffer without proper drinking water supply,” Singh maintained.
Bachiter Singh and other local residents of the area informed that 200 households have been affected by the damaged water supply pipes as water supply has been affected. “If anyhow, water comes to some tap it is mostly contaminated and unfit to consume,” they claimed, adding that the only water tank for supplying water in the area has not been cleaned for the last about 20 years when it was constructed .
They also said that they visited office of Jal Shakti Department Udhampur many times but were not properly listened to and the problem has not been resolved till date.
When contacted Jal Shakti Executive Engineer, Udhampur said that when the project of PMGSY road was being prepared then they had submitted a Detailed Project Report of about Rs 28 lakh to PMGSY department for approval but only about Rs 23 lakh was approved out of which only Rs 2 lakh has been given so far to restore the water supply by laying new pipeline.
He further said that when the remaining amount will reach them the pipes will be replaced and water problem will be solved otherwise it is not possible to restore the supply.
