Anantnag, May 9: At a time when people are facing the brunt of COVID-19 pandemic and losing lives, the rich and influential in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district are taking undue advantage of lockdown by raising illegal commercial constructions around the town.
A spot visit revealed that the construction works going on alongside Ashajipora-Mehandi Kadal bypass, KP Road and in and around Mattan Adda Anantnag.
Reports said that the officials of Municipal Council Anantnag were allegedly hand in glove with the violators and were allowing them to carry on construction works.
The officials, they said, weren’t taking action against the violators despite being directed by senior officers.
“They always mislead senior officers and convey to them that they have stopped the construction work but actually on ground the violator is never being asked to stop instead the influential violators are being helped out by these officials,” they said, adding violators easily bribe MCA officials and even use political connections to ensure constructions works continue uninterruptedly.
A senior officer admitted that his subordinates weren’t cooperating with him in stopping illegal constructions. “Honestly one officer can’t stop it,” he said, however wished not to be named.
Meanwhile Chairman Municipal Council Anantnag Hilal Ahmad Shah told Early Times that he too has received complaints regarding the illegal constructions taking place in Anantnag town.
“I am also receiving complaints and today I stopped the construction of around 51 shops in Anantnag town near Mattan Adda,” Shah said, adding notices were being issued to violators.
Regarding the construction of a huge shopping complex on Ashajipora-Mehandi Kadal bypass road, Hilal Ahmad Shah said that he will seek records from the concerned officer once the office opens.
“It was a holiday today. Once the office opens I will seek records from the concerned officer,” he said.
Since 2016, Anantnag town has witnessed haphazard and unplanned constructions. Huge commercial complexes have been constructed without seeking mandatory permissions from Municipal Council Anantnag and even the officials of Anantnag municipality allowed constructions on state land on KP Road Anantnag.
One such officer who allowed these constructions along with three others were placed under suspension order vide no: 153-HUD of 2019 dated 04/07/2019 for their alleged involvement in ‘Building permission scam’.
