Rajiv Nagar residents on verge of starvation
‘No work; no money to buy ration’
5/11/2021 11:33:29 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, May 11: We do daily labour and in the evening bring some ration to feed our family, but due to ongoing Corona Curfew, we have no work for earning and our families are on the verge of starvation, said the residents of Rajiv Nagar in Narwal area on the city outskirts.
This is the story of over 200 families mostly Diharidar (daily wager), and all are struggling to survive with hunger and Corona. We have had nothing to cook in our home for the last five days, even though we are not getting regular drinking water supply, said angry women, while talking to Early Times News Channel.
“I have no money to buy milk for my four-month old son”, said a woman, showing empty utensils. “Not only my family is facing a food crisis, but this is the story of every household in our area”, she added.
“I’m the lone bread earner of my family, I have my parents and grandmother, but I’m jobless for the last 15 days due to curfew”, said a youth of Rajiv Nagar, adding that when the administration-imposed curfew, it must have planned to feed us. “Not only, Rajiv Nagar, but there are hundreds of localities in Jammu, where labour and vendors reside. During this time all the labourers and their families are on the verge of starvation. May we survive with Corona, but we will certainly die of hunger”, he said.
“Nobody knows that when the Corona curfew will be lifted, how long we can sit home without food.
The government should give us permission for earning livelihood or provide sufficient ration, money and medicines to every family”, said another woman of the same locality.
“We have suffered a lot last year, and now once again we are suffering as we don’t have money to buy food, medicines etc.”, said the resident in one voice. “We appeal, Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha to take care of labour and daily wager, who feed their families by working daily. It has been almost two weeks, when the corona curfew was imposed for three days and yet it is being extended to contain the spread of virus. Not only this virus, but hunger also kills. So the government should immediately start free ration supply to us without any further delay”, they said.
