Rural populace without a smart-phone left out in COVID vaccination drive | Countryside asks Govt increase vaccination centers, make registration available offline | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, May 11: Amid the resurgence of COVID-19 second wave, the government in Jammu and Kashmir may face an uphill task in vaccinating the rural populace of the erstwhile state as the registration for the jabs is being done via an online mode. The countryside however has erratic networks which is turning the task herculean for the commoners. In the rural areas of Jammu division reports are coming to the fore that people are facing a plethora of problems in getting registered for Covid vaccination. Reports inform that the lack of registration of people hailing from various villages is due to lack of mobile network in remote areas and border areas. Many villagers do not even have smartphones, from which they would have been able to register for the jabs. Most people are not even fully aware of this the manner in which registration for COVID vaccine is done. On several occasions, the slots are also not getting empty, due to which there is a problem in getting the registration done. As per the reports, there are about 65 lakh people in the age group of 18 to 45 years, and that as per the government claims, vaccination for all of them has started. However, there are also complaints pouring in that the vaccination centers established across Jammu and Kashmir are reaching more urban than the villagers. Up to two hundred and fifty vaccinations are being given in the immunization centers opened by the government to people above 18 years of age. Out of them, only 30 to 40 people, as per various inputs, from rural areas are able to get vaccinations, the rest are reaching the urban populace alone. Locals hailing from Jammu’s far-off areas also stated that the entire process of vaccination is being done online, and that those who do not have a smartphone are left in lurch. Due to this, there is despair among the rural people and that the population in the rural area is also high and most people are dependent on farming and animal husbandry and are generally unaware of the procedures. Furthermore, the paddy farming is also going to start in the coming days, so the safety of the people of the villages should be the priority of the government. There is a demand from the rural populace of Jammu and Kashmir that the number of vaccination centers opened by the government should be increased so that there is not too much congestion at the vaccination centers. Also, all people could get vaccinated as soon as possible. There is a need to increase vaccination centers in rural areas. |
