Ventilators haunt Health Deptt
5/16/2021 11:22:51 PM
The mortality rate increasing in Jammu region due to COVID-19 has put a question mark on the availability of facilities in the hospitals.
According to the media reports the Health and Medical Education Department had purchased 400 ventilators during the first COVID-19 wave but it seems that these life saving machines have not been put in use.
People, whose kith and kin have died due to COVID-19, have been alleging that their patients were not put on ventilators and had they been provided with the life support they would have survived.
Denizens are asking why the ventilators provided by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, from PM Cares fund have been not utilized. These are new machines and just have to be installed. Then what has stopped the hospital administration from using them.
Doctors and paramedical staff are doing a commendable job and are risking their lives to save patients. But these people need to be provided with the equipment that’s required to handle the patients. Past experience has proven beyond doubt that the behavior of the virus is unpredictable and even a normal patient can turn critical at any point of time. Fighting COVID-19 is about maintaining oxygen saturation. Till the saturation remains above 90 one can assume that he/she is fine but if it falls below 90 it puts a person’s life at risk. The high flow oxygen is one of the most effective tools to fight the COVID-19 and it’s important that the hospitals are equipped with high and low flow oxygen beds.
The Jammu and Kashmir government has taken many steps to contain the COVID-19 cases and fight the prevailing second wave but still a lot needs to be done. The helmsmen should keep their mind open and listen to the suggestions that experts are coming up with on a day to day basis.
The Health Department should explain what it did with the ventilators that were provided by the Centre. If these life saving machines have been installed then the government should come up with the details about where these ventilators are being used. If these have not been utilized then the Health Department should explain the reason for not utilizing these machines. Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has already asked the states and union territories to conduct an audit of the ventilators. The second wave has broken our back and the experts are of the opinion that the third wave too could be in the offing. We need to remain prepared to face any eventuality.
