Huge population of 70000 souls suffer as inferior quality macadam laid on roads in Budgam | | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, July 5: A huge population consisting of around 70,000 souls in Central Kashmir’s Budgam district is suffering due to the inferior quality macadam that was laid on the road connecting Khag area with the Aripanthan area in the district. Reports said that the Khag-Aripanthan road is in shambles despite the fact that it acts as a vital link to villages like Hazarpora, Kandama, Gumboora, Nasarpora, Lookipora, Suresh and Poshkar. The road has developed huge potholes and it has become unbearable for people to travel on this road. “The macadamization has started on the road from June 16, but inferior quality material is being used in the same. We have complained to the concerned authorities that the contractor is using inferior quality material, but so far no action has been taken,” said a group of locals while sharing views with Early Times. The locals said that the testing of material has been started at the source site with the material also being lifted from the plant and at the site of roads. They said that since the last 20 days macadam has been laid on three kilometers with the machinery and men carrying out the work at Naserpora. They demanded complete macadamization of the road upto Aripanthan. “It is highly unfortunate that the government has decided to macadamize only six kilometres of the road; four kilometers from Khag to Suresh and two kilometers from Aripanthan to Gumboora. There is a need for complete macadamization of the road from Khag to Aripanthan with proper drainage in the form of laying of iron pipes on the road. This would ensure that the macadamized road is not damaged during winter,” said the locals. It would be in place to mention here that the work was earlier allotted to JK construction and the people blamed the company for delay in the completion of the work with the company also not adhering to the CRF guidelines and violated the contract of the agreement. The road also leads to Tosa Maidan, Kashmir’s biggest meadow. The locals said that it takes them hours to cover the 10 kilometers long ‘bumpy’ road. They said that nobody is bothered to pay heed towards their inconvenience, adding the road turns muddy during rains. The work on construction of the road was started in 2016 under a centrally sponsored scheme with the estimated cost of Rs 13 crores. As per the project report the road was to be widened 40 feet. At some places it is only 15 feet as the government has failed to provide proper compensation to people whose land and structures including houses, shops and other structures come under this road. The administration recently released compensation in favour of the landowners of Khag area, while compensation of houses, shops and other structures and apple orchard land of Naserpora, Suresh and Palpora has not been released so far. The locals said that the compensation files are lying in the office of Chief Engineer. |
