Pushing Jammu To Edge | | | The Jammu and Kashmir Government scrapping 149-year old Durbar Move practice would hit Jammu hard. If the administration sticks to its decision, businessmen and other people in Jammu would face heavy losses. Everyone is aware of the fact that business during winter season in Jammu picks up. The government employees who come along with their families and kith and kin to Jammu from Kashmir for six months add to the hustle and bustle of markets in the city. From needles to clothes they purchase everything. From a street vendor to a big showroom owner everyone gets benefitted. The decision to scrap the Durbar Move was taken without taking traders into confidence. As its people are facing immense hardships due to COVID-19 pandemic and calling of Durbar Move will add to their miseries. In 1988, the then chief minister of J&K Dr Farooq Abdullah had issued an order to end Durbar Move practice, but his move had evoked resentment in Jammu, following which the then government was forced to withdraw its order. The government is claiming that it would save Rs 200 crore by calling off the practice but businessmen in Jammu are of the opinion that they would lose Rs 500 crore due to this decision. It’s unfortunate that helmsmen don’t even want to know about the problems of a common man. Since the day J&K has turned into a union territory the administrators have been issuing one order after another without even thinking about the repercussions these moves could have. Since the day the government has announced its decision to call off Durbar Move practice, traders in Jammu are thinking about their future course of action. If the helmsmen remain adamant there is every possibility of Jammu traders taking a strong exception to it. The decision needs to be reversed as business is the mainstay of Jammu economy, not many people in this region have government jobs like Kashmir. There are small shops in every nook and corner of Jammu city and these cannot run without customers. It’s unfortunate that the J&K administration wants to cripple these small time traders, who are dependent on people from Kashmir. Winter is the peak business season for Jammu. The government should not ruin it by calling it a day.
