Business activities affected in Srinagar on Burhan’s death anniversary | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, July 8: Business activities were affected in capital city of Srinagar on Thursday on the 5th death anniversary of Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) commander Burhan Wani. Shops and business establishments in Srinagar remained closed though traffic was plying on all routes and government offices and banks were functioning normally. Business activities in the main business hubs, including historic Lal Chowk, the nerve centre of the city, Hari Singh High Street (HSHS), Budshah Chowk, Maisuma, Court road, Amira Kadal, Jehangir Chowk, Mahraji Bazar, Gonikhan and Regal chowk were affected. The otherwise busy Jamia market also remained closed today. The historic Jamia Masjid also remained closed due to COVID restrictions for the past about two months. Shops and business establishments at Nowhatta, Gojiwara, entire Nallahmar, Khanayar also remained closed. However, there was no impact in Rainawari and adjoining areas where business was going on normally. On this day in 2016 Burhan was killed by security forces in an encounter at Bumdoora Kokernag in south Kashmir district of Anantnag, leading to massive protests and violence that left about 96 protestors, who defied curfew restrictions, dead and over 4000 security personnel and 15000 people injured in the clashes. Most parts of the valley witnessed over 50 day curfew restrictions during Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and BJP coalition government headed by Mehbooba Mufti. Recently a letter appeared on social media asking people to observe strike on July 8. However, the family members of former chairman of hardline Hurriyat Conference (HC) Syed Ali Shah Geelani strongly refuted the claim that the strike call was issued by him (Geelani). Later police registered a case for unknown persons for circulating fake letter of Geelani.
