Covid third wave in offing | | | A committee of experts constituted under the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) has warned of a third Covid wave that could peak in India around late October. The panel has sought better preparedness for children who might be at high risk. Now, the question is, are we prepared to face the third wave of the pestilence which is apparently knocking at our doors. The report has stated that the Covid third wave will affect the children and necessary measures need to be put in place to prevent them from falling prey to the virus. There are not many hospitals for children in Jammu and Kashmir and the medical staff too is limited. The report submitted by the panel has recommended that adequate facilities should be put in place to keep the mortality rate under check. The experts have been repeatedly warning against lowering the guard in the fight against the virus, they have predicted that the third wave could be highly dangerous, fatal and can take a heavy toll of lives. The second wave taught us many lessons and we should learn from our past experiences. When the second wave reached its peak the hospitals were overcrowded and many people died due to oxygen not being provided to them on time. In May J&K witnessed 1625 COVID-19 deaths, accounting for around 40% of the total toll since the start of the pandemic in March last year, and 114359 cases were added to the overall tally. The government has expedited the vaccination drive and people above the age of 18-years are being provided with the COVID-19 jabs but children still continue to remain unvaccinated as the drive has not been thrown open for them. If we want to save ourselves from the wrath of the third wave, all the adults should get vaccinated. And the government needs to expedite the process of throwing open the vaccination drive for children also. The government recently extended the closure of educational institutions in Jammu and Kashmir and announced that these will be opened when the students and staff are vaccinated fully. It’s amply clear that the authorities don’t want to take any risk. When the Covid second wave hit the Valley earlier this year, schools had emerged as the hotspots and proved to be one of the reasons for infection spreading like wildfire. Everyone is hoping that Covid third wave will be defeated but for that we have to remain extra cautious and vigilant. Following the Covid appropriate behavior and getting vaccinated holds the key. |
