Indian Army officials body yet to be found, Govt to celebrate water sports on Ranjit Sagar Dam | Bibi Marey Te Halwa, Baba Marey Te Halwa! | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 24: Even as the recent tragic crash of Indian Army helicopter into the Ranjit Sagar Dam that claimed lives of two officials continues to haunt the nation, the Jammu and Kashmir government seems to be in hurry to celebrate waters sports events in the waterbody. While mortal remains of one of the slain officials is yet to be found, the J&K Government has announced hosting of the sporting event at the tragedy site in Jammu province. On August 15, mortal remains of one of the two pilots of an Army helicopter were found. As per the officials, the search and rescue operation for the mortal remains of the second pilot continues. “Mortal remains of Lt Col AS Baath retrieved from a depth of 75.9 metres at 6:19 pm from the Ranjit Sagar lake. Efforts to retrieve mortal remains of the second pilot continue,” a source had said. The Rudra helicopter belonging to the Army Aviation wing had crashed into the lake on August 3 when it was carrying out a training sortie. The chopper belonged to the Army’s Pathankot-based Aviation Squadron. Amid a tragedy where the body of the other official was yet to be found, the Jammu and Kashmir government on August 20 announced that “Water Sports to commence at Ranjit Sagar Dam by 31st August 2021.” The decision was taken at a meeting to review the functioning of the Youth Services & Sports Department. “Reviewing the water sports facilities at the Ranjit Sagar Dam, the Chief Secretary directed the Department to complete the equipment audit and commence training of the youth in kayaking and canoeing sports by 31st August 2021,” an official handout had said. The government decision to host the sporting event when the mortal remains are missing has drawn criticism from the nationalist circles. “Family is waiting for the mortal remains of the braveheart and government wants to prioritize sporting celebrations at the same venue, it can’t be more disgusting than this,” said a veteran on the condition of anonymity. He alleged that the decision to host such an event “speaks volumes about the callousness of the official machinery.” “This decision is like disrespect for the bravehearts and the babus must reconsider the decision which hurts our collective nationalist sentiment,” the veteran said. |
