New jobs out of sight, babus out to snatch old jobs also | Tribune winds up its offices in J&K, many dailies curtail staff | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 24: The J&K administration has been trumpeting that it’s creating new employment avenues in the Union Territory and is facilitating the outside business houses to invest in J&K, but the ground situation contradicts these claims. The big brands that were brought to J&K by the former regimes have wind up their operations in the UT and have called it a day. The erstwhile governments had brought newspapers like Tribune to Jammu and Kashmir and it had employed a good number of people. But the Tribune had to wind up its Jammu and Srinagar offices as it didn’t get the requisite support from the J&K administration during the past two years. Similarly many dailies having staff strength of more than 150 have curtailed their staff due to management not getting much support from the authorities. The bureaucrats are trying to muzzle the genuine voice by resorting to pressure tactics.” An analyst while talking to Early Times said, “When erstwhile J&K state was transformed into a Union Territory and its special status was revoked people were told that more job opportunities will be created and outside business houses will be invited to set up their ventures in J&K. But the announcement has remained confined to papers only.” He said, “Instead of creating new job opportunities, old jobs have been snatched from the people. The staff members of the organizations that have winded up operations, include people who are middle aged, and are finding it hard to get a new job. Bureaucrats seem to be hell bent upon ruining the good work done by the Centre Recently the J&K administration said that it has finalized proposals worth Rs 23000 crore from various industrialists and many more are in the final stage of approval while some others are under consideration. “Out of the total of Rs 23,000 crore worth proposals approved by the Union Territory Government so far, Rs 12,000 crore investments has come in Jammu division and Rs 11,000 crore in Kashmir and Jammu region is leading in attracting investment from the industrialists.” But so far no industry which plans to set up its unit in J&K has issued any advertisements for the job seekers, nor has the government notified the industrial estates where these units will come up. Even the local industry is in dire straits as no major incentives have been extended to these during the past two years. An observer said, “There is nothing visible on the ground but one thing is crystal clear that many youths have lost their jobs during the past two years. Before attracting new industries the J&K administration should try to save the existing units and ventures.” |
