Famous Nandini on Jmu-Sgr highway turns into desert | Authorities abandon heritage spot, leave hundreds of people jobless | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 4: Nandini, a famous spot, on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, which used to be the favourite destination for the travelers for tea and paneer pakora has turned into a desert after National Highway-44 has been thrown open. A visit to Nandini can break anyone’s heart as the old road is in a dilapidated condition and the tea shops which used to remain flooded with the visitors have been abandoned by the people who used to run these. Tirath Ram, a resident of Nandini area said, “After the new highway has become operational no one has looked towards Nadini village. The old highway through which thousands of vehicles used to pass everyday has been discarded and has not been even repaired once during all these years. Even a sign board has not been put at the new highway that could shown the directions towards our village.” He said, “Link roads connecting Nandini village with the new highway are in shambles and are not in a motorable condition. People who used to earn their livelihoods by selling tea and paneer pakoras have been rendered jobless. No one has even come to see whether we are dead or alive.” Locals said that authorities are taking appropriate care of wild animals around Nandini village but the humans have been left to fend on their own. “The population of monkeys in Nandini area has increased manifolds and humans are in conflict with them,” they said. It’s in place to mention here that Nandini is famous across the country as it was a favourite destination for the Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrims and other travelers on the highway. The government needs to bring it on the tourism map and develop it as a tourist destination. It would restore the pristine glory of the place and would help the locals to earn their livelihood once again. |
