Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Jan 30: Kick boxing is considered to be a naïve sport among girls more so at a place like Kashmir, but a young girl from North Kashmir's Bandipora district has set out a path for other girls to follow while pursuing this martial art as a professional sport.
14 years old Tajamul Islam from Muslimabad in Bandipora has won medals as well as accolades in kick boxing both at the national and international levels. A student of eighth class at Army Goodwill School, Bandipora, Tajamul started kick boxing at the age of five although she wanted to start the same at an earlier age.
Tajamul got inspired from her father and started playing the kick boxing while she was in the under kindergarten (UKG) class. It seemed that kick boxing ran in the blood of Tajamul and her siblings since all of them tried their luck in the kick boxing game. Kick boxing game gave recognition to Tajamul and she feels elated over it.
Sharing her views, Tajamul says, "I wanted to start playing kick boxing at the age of three years but my father stopped me as he had apprehension that I would get hurt. When I started playing kick boxing my father did not stop me following which there was no looking back."
Since Tajamul was a student of Army Goodwill Public School, Bandipora she got encouragement from the teachers there with Major Raghuvinder Singh being the main driving force. She was asked to perform acts like punching; kicking and self defence at the school following which she took up the game of kick boxing seriously.
Tajamul attained fame in 2016 when she won the gold medal in the world kick boxing championship at Adriana in Italy. She won gold at the national kick boxing championship in Delhi in 2015 in the under 13 category. In the sub-junior category Tajamul won gold at her debut tournament at Jammu in 2015.
"I started my career from the district level and subsequently graduated to state, national and international level. I won medals at the local, national and international levels but my dream is a big one. I want to compete in the Olympics and I can do that when I reach the age of 18. I have already started my preparations for the event even though I am 14 this time," says Tajamul.
Tajamul wants to pursue her dream of competing and wining in the Olympics and also wants to pursue academics. She wants to become an orthopaedician saying that she would try to fix the broken bones. She says that since kick boxing revolves around bones she would like to become the orthopaedician.
At present she also helps her father in managing the affairs of Hyder Sports Academy set up by her father Ghulam Mohammad Lone, basically a transporter. She has a word for praise for Young Genius saying that same would motivate more and more kids to pursue their dream without impacting their academics.
