JMC warns against throwing garbage into Ranbir canal but forgets to clean it, I&FC Deptt too in slumber | Jammu, Smart City! | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Feb 3: It seems Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) after erecting a notice board with a warning “Throwing of garbage in canal is punishable offence” along the offshoot of Ranbir Canal in Talab Tillo area of Jammu city has forgotten that the canal has to be kept clean and maintained properly. The JMC entrusted with keeping the city clean and the Irrigation and Flood Control Department, which takes care of the canal, are apparently putting in no efforts to keep the water body clean during its shut down period in winter. The Ranbir Canal and its offshoots, which pass through many localities of the city, have become a dumping ground for garbage and almost clogged by polythene and other solid waste dumped by the people. Though strict instructions have been passed that it will be cleaned regularly and action would be taken against people caught dumping their garbage in it, nothing has been done to keep the canal clean. “It is not only the department which is responsible for the plight of the water body, but people living around it are also equally to blame for its present state. It is quite unfortunate that we could not take care of our water bodies and for the same reason we have not been left with enough water,” said a shopkeeper of the area. The inaction of the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) in lifting garbage from various spots of the dry canal is becoming a major health hazard for the locals of the adjoining areas as well the traders running their businesses nearby. |
