As streetlights don’t work, risk of thefts looms large over Reasi
3/7/2022 11:47:45 PM

EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, Mar 7: Despite being a district headquarters, Reasi town lacks a civic amenity as basic as streetlights which remain non-functional during night hours.
With the majority of the streetlights in most of the localities especially in Bus Stand area do not work in dark hours, the town is under potential risk of thefts and robberies in markets as well as residential areas.
Several locals said criminals often take advantage of the dimly lit roads and target business establishments and residences.
Cases of street crimes such as snatching are also a possibility, especially on the stretches which are poorly lit. “I think twice before going to a nearby market alone after sundown. The street near my house is not well lit and I fear someone may target me,” a local resident said.
Residents said that inadequate streetlights could lead to a spurt in crime, especially in incidents of thefts, robberies and snatching.
A few traders said, “We are making repeated requests to the Municipal Committee Reasi on the need to make streetlights functional in and around the bus stand area as there is possibility of thieves may strike taking advantage of darkness.
Burglars often manage to escape in the cover of darkness.”
“We have not seen a single streetlight working here since long. This is an alarming situation. We shut our shops at the mercy of God as goods worth lakhs could be lost within a few minutes as dark stretches encourage thieves to strike at will,” they added.
People equally blame the Municipal Committee, Reasi and Police for not making the required amendments. “One simply doesn’t know what’s coming up when there are dark or poorly lit roads, particularly market places,” locals said.
