Panthayal Tunnel nowhere near completion, LG admin sets April 15 as inauguration date | Building Castles In Air! | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 3: Contrary to what has been claimed by the LG administration over the much crucial Panthayal Tunnel and its completion, the ground situation is different. The work is far from completion and could nullify what the government here has been claiming so far. As seen in the picture, the work on the tunnel has not been completed as of now and that as per the estimates, it could take months all together to get completed. The LG government, interestingly, had set April 15 this year as the deadline for the completion of the tunnel and making it operational for the traffic plying on Jammu- Srinagar highway. The story goes back to January 25, this year. Chief Secretary chaired a meeting to review the condition of the National Highway-44 connecting Jammu and Srinagar, and took stock of the traffic movement thereon. Principal Secretary, Public Works (R&B) Department, representative of NHAI, Deputy Commissioner, Ramban, and district SP, Ramban participated in the meeting. It was informed that the Department has prioritised construction and maintenance of the National Highway-44 which had kept the highway open for vehicular traffic even during extreme weather vagaries. Reviewing the progress of works at the Panthayal Tunnel, the Chief Secretary directed the NHAI to double its efforts and complete the pending works by 15th April 2022. The Chief Secretary emphasised that on completion, the tunnel will provide reliable connectivity by-passing the current landslide-prone stretch of NH-44 and as such will provide safe and secure transit to vehicles. At present, however, the condition, as per the ground situation of the national highway also called NH-44 is such that one has to cross the treacherous mountains snaking through Ramban and Ramsoo from the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway to reach Kashmir from various parts of the country by road. The new tunnel was set to become a solution to the hardships that occur due to landslides at many places on the highway, most of this problem comes between Ramban and Ramsoo. However, if the tunnel at Panthiyal would have become operational, NH44 will almost become an all-weather highway, reducing time and distance to a great extent. The Ramsoo and Ramban section is considered as the most treacherous of all portions due to its geology and an extensive ravine system replete with deep gorges. The traffic chaos is often throwing the highway out of gear, halting the vehicular movement sometimes for days altogether. |
