Early Times Report

JAMMU, Apr 20: A startling revelation about the dismal state of education in Jammu division has come to the fore. More than 250 government run schools are closing down due to the zero enrolment in them, brutally unmasking the claims of the administration about ensuring education at the grass-roots in the erstwhile state.
Jammu district has the highest number of primary schools with 48 primary schools with zero enrolment. There are 22 such primary schools in Doda district, 30 in Kathua, 25 in Kishtwar, 17 in Poonch, 31 in Rajouri, 9 in Ramban, 5 in Reasi, 25 in Samba and 33 in Udhampur. Enrolment is zero in 35 primary schools in Anantnag and Baramulla in Kashmir division.
The School Education Department has transferred the teachers posted in such schools to other schools. However, the buildings of these schools were not in use for a long time. The department had given some buildings to the rural development department. Now the health department will also use these buildings as health centers. Health centers running in rented accommodation will be shifted to the buildings of these schools. This will save the revenue of the government as per the officials.
Furthermore, there is zero enrolment in 254 primary schools in Jammu division, that is, not a single child has been enrolled in these schools. The school is closed due to lack of children. The education department is closing the schools with zero enrolment. Along with this, schools with less than 15 enrolments are being accommodated. The government has identified 2000 thousand schools. Out of this, seven hundred schools are being accommodated. The process of adjusting the remaining schools is on.
A senior official said that the government is set to constitute a committee that will decide the fate of the buildings which are being given to other departments. Meanwhile, another official said that such a scenario reflects the utter failure of the education department in luring kids to the school and imparting them education at large.
