Sindhu signs off with bronze medal | | | agencies MANILA, Apr 30: Indian ace PV Sindhu settled for the bronze medal in the Badminton Asia Championships as she lost to Japan's Akane Yamaguchi in the women's singles semifinal here on Saturday. The two-time Olympic medallist went down 21-13, 19-21, 16-21 to the reigning world champion in one hour and six minutes to win her second medal at the continental meet. She has won her first Asian medal in 2014 after losing to China's Wang Shixian in the semifinal. Sindhu got off to a good start and dominated the proceedings in the opening game and went on to take the set 21-13. Yamaguchi showcased much more intent in the second game as she bagged early four points. Sindhu pocketed the next six points and went from 1-4 down to lead 11-6 at mid-game. Post break, Sindhu got penalised for not serving sooner and lost her rhythm. Yamaguchi took advantage of it and managed to force the decider by taking the second game 19-21. In the third game, both players engaged in longer rallies but Yamaguchi kept her cool to seal a spot in the final. This was Sindhu's ninth loss against the Yamaguchi in 22 meetings. In their last meetings, the Indian ace defeated the Japanese in the BWF World Tour Finals 2021 semifinal and prevailed over Yamaguchi 21-13, 22-20 in the Tokyo Olympics quarterfinals match. |
