| Kashmir drifts as politicians disappear from scene | | |

JAMMU, Aug 9: The common masses in Kashmir feel totally isolated due to the failure of the mainstream politicians to establish contact with people at grass root level where the normal life has been completely paralyzed for the past 31 days now.
According to sources the Kashmiris have been taken to ransom by a section of separatist leaders and subversive elements whose number however is very less while the majority of people in Valley are for prevalence of peace and restoration of normalcy.
Sources said that Kashmiris are not with Pakistan too and they hesitate to raise pro -Pak slogans during the mass rallies and public protests too. In such rally out of total number of protestors only four to five percent respond to pro-Pak slogans while rest want to avert it which is a total indication that Kashmiris are not interested in Pakistan.
Citing an example in this regard sources said that during massive public protest in Sumbal Sonwari area where a youth was run over by an army vehicle early this morning against the death, some vested elements and Pak agents tried to exploit the situation by raising pro Pak slogans but out of 4000 strong crowd only four to five percent responded to the slogan where 96 percent did not respond and preferred to keep quite. However the people were protesting against the road mishap and demanding action as per law against the driver and his arrest which in normal course can happen in any part of country where such a fatal accident takes place.
Sources said that every Kashmiri is neither a separatist nor anti Indian but failure of government to take preemptive measures to contain situation from taking a worst turn has been the cause of the present unrest in Valley where every tom dick and harry joined the protests after the masses were exploited by certain vested elements for their political interests and the killing of dreaded terrorist Burhan Wani just became
a turning point which the government could not visualize before hand and it failed to take preventive measures to stop the situation from taking a critical turn.
Sources said even during last one month leaving the union government aside no sincere efforts were made by the State government as well as the political parties including the opposition to crate a liaison with the common masses in Valley and seek their support in restoration of peace and normalcy in the Valley.
The people today feel totally isolated and they play in the hands of subversives as well as separatists who on the behest of their mentors across the border want to turn Kashmir into a battle field and take it hundreds of years back or to the medieval period. Even the failure of the government to rope in all the progress and democratic forces in Valley to mobilize a public opinion against the terrorism and separatism goes to the advantage of the enemy country as well as separatists, sources added.
Sources said that even there are many people in Kashmir like houseboat owners, hoteliers, traders, fruit merchants, people doing with handicrafts and art besides some progressive and democratic forces who have strong faith and belief in secular values and have taken a front against the terrorism and separatism even when the terrorists were ruling the roost in Valley but they totally feel dejected as the government has failed to establish links of communication with them. |
