Police to act tough against stone pelters

Srinagar, Aug 9: In an attempt to end month long protests in Kashmir, the police on Tuesday said that it would continue action against the youth involved in stone pelting.
A senior police official preferring anonymity told early TIMES that they have identified those who create law and order problem in the valley. "We have identified stone pelters through videography and have already detained some of them. There are more arrests to come and the crackdown will continue against those indulging in stone pelting," the police officer told early times.
At least 55 people including two policemen have been killed, and over 3,500 civilians and 3,000 security personnel injured in the ongoing unrest triggered by the killing of Hizb commander Burhan Wani on July 8.
Sources said that Police have arrested scores of youth from different parts of Kashmir for taking part in protests and stone pelting.
Sources said that scores of youth allegedly involved in stone pelting have been arrested from Pulwama, Anantnag, Kulgam, Shopian, Baramulla, Bandipora, and Srinagar.
According to sources many youths from Shopian and Pulwama and Srinagar districts were detained during nocturnal raids.
In Anantnag district, dozens of youth have been arrested so far.
In Srinagar and Baramulla districts several youths were also picked up.
Inspector-General Syed Javaid Mujtaba Gillani had said that the arrests were made in a bid to end a month of protests in which more than 55 civilians had been killed and thousands of others injured.
Meanwhile police sources said that scores of youth are on the run as police have identified those who have been allegedly part of the stone pelting incidents during the last one month.
It is to mention here that in New Delhi, opposition politicians on Tuesday on the second straight day questioned ruling central government's silence over the situation in Kashmir and demanded that the government take steps to defuse the crisis.
Police have already placed top separatist leaders including hardliner Syed Ali Shah Geelani and moderate leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq under house arrest while a dozen others including Mohammad Yasin Malik and Shabir Shah have been detained.
