Early Times Report

Srinagar, Aug 13: With police having failed to restore law and order in Kashmir for over a month and separatists calling the shots, the government apprehends major "Pakistan Day" celebrations in the restive Valley on August 14 when the neighboring country celebrates its independence day. While the "united Hurriyat" has given a call for "referendum march" to the Lal Chowk here security analyst believe that the separatists want to cash the protest program for major celebrations of the "Pakistan Day" on Indian soil. Official sources said "Pakistan was widely pumping in resources including Hawala money to make the Pakistan Day" celebrations in Kashmir a success to "show the world community that people of Kashmir want referendum." Apart from the separatists, the militants and their "sleeper cells" are believed to be actively working on the grassroots to make the "Pakistan Day" a success. Officials apprehend that besides marches and waving of flags, there are apprehensions that Pro-Pakistan songs will be played on mosque loudspeakers throughout the day. "One thing has been clear that the unrest is being backed by their Pakistani handlers so these separatists are leaving no stone unturned to challenge the integrity of India," said an observer. Sources said police has inputs that Pakistani flags will be waved at major towns across Kashmir, particularly in south and north of the Valley. "There are reports that in Pulwama, Anantnag, Kulgam, Baramulla and Kupwara districts, green flags will be waved in almost every village," said an official. Intelligence inputs suggest that militants have already been working in south Kashmir areas like Pulwama and Anatnang to make to make the event a success through "posters campaign and door to door messaging." "We apprehend hoisting of Pak flags in all villages and rural markets, particularly in south Kashmir," said an official. Since July 8, when militant commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani was killed in an encounter, the Valley has been witnessing a major unrest with over 57 having been killed and over 6000 including 2000 security force personnel wounded. Then union and the central governments are unable to decide upon handing over of the restive Valley to Army for situation of improvement. Recently, however, during a debate over Kashmir in the Parliament, Home Minister Rajnath Singh ruled out any such plans. Singh was responding to a query made by senior Congress leader and leader of the Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad.
