Vendors, general public booked for violating COTPA Act | | | Early Times Report Akhnoor, Aug 20: A special squad from the Drugs and Food Control Department, Jammu conducted surprise checks at various places in Akhnoor Bus Stand and the markets surrounding it. The checks were carried out to check COTPA compliance in various sectors in the area. The team headed by Assistant Controller Food Safety, Department of Drugs and Food Control, Ajit Singh also included Food Inspectors, Maneesh, Manzoor and Suresh. The team booked numerous vendors under various sections of COTPA act 2003. Pertinently, the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) enacted in the year 2003 is aimed to discourage the consumption of tobacco products through progressive restrictions and to protect non-smokers from passive smoking. Prohibition on smoking in public spaces, prohibition on all forms of direct/indirect advertisement, promotion and sponsorship of tobacco products, prohibition on sale of tobacco products to minors and within a radius of 100 yards of educational institutions and mandatory depiction of specified health warnings on all tobacco products are the major provisions of COTPA. |
