Early Times Report
Rajouri, Aug 20: A multi-crore scam has allegedly surfaced in Rajouri district of Jammu province whereby poor matriculate girls have been duped of scholarship money worth over Rs 2.5 cr which was allotted to them under a special scheme launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
As if duping them of their genuine scholarship of Rs 10,000 for each beneficiary was not enough the poor girls were now allegedly being threatened to keep quiet by the scamsters, who allegedly include a politician, a businessman and some officials. Despite public outcry, the administration has been unwilling to file any case.
Official sources said as a part of Pradhan Mantri Koshal Vikas Yojna, unemployed matriculate girls were taught stitching and tailoring and on the completion of the course were scheduled to get Rs 10,000 each.
The beneficiaries included girls from Sundarbani, Kalakote, Taryath, Dhramshal, and Pouni Tehsils of Rajouri district here. "In all the panchayat blocks, four to five training centres were established for the scheme launched by the office of prime minister," sources said.
One of the main centers where the girls were provided 45-day training was a computer institute at Sunderbani.
"After the completion of the course, we received SMSs on our cellphones that Rs 10,000 have been deposited in our accounts, but when we rushed to the bank, we were shocked to know that the amount has already been withdrawn," the girls alleged.
"Given the fact that there were around 150 centers in Rajouri district and each center had around 25 girls the amount totals to Rs 2.5 cr in the district alone," sources said.
Sham Lal, a complainant and panch at the of Block Laite Panchayat, said four of her relative girls were among the victims as they too had been duped. After finding around 100 more such girls from the area, he took them to a senior official in the civil administration to file a complaint.
The senior officer was too not showing any interest in getting the matter probed, he alleged, saying that the official machinery had succumbed to the pressure of a politician.
One of the girl complainants was alleged to have threatened of dire consequences by the owner of a computer institute in case she failed to maintain complete silence in the matter.
Meanwhile, the victims have decided to file a complaint with the office of prime minister and the office of chief minister Mehbooba Mufti.
The locals have appealed to the prime minister to order a CBI inquiry into the alleged misappropriation of scholarships.
