Potholes on Jammu roads threaten lives
8/21/2016 11:14:43 AM

Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 20: Never in the recent memory have Jammuites seen such dilapidated roads and all fingers of accusation are on the Roads and buildings department, which failed to repair the roads before the onset of monsoon. Potholes on the roads of winter capital of the state are not only threatening not only precious lives but also giving vent to the brewing anger of Jammuites.
"In last thirty years, I have never seen Jammu's roads in such a state as they are in today and it is the BJP that shall have to take all the blame" said Vivek, a local businessman. "It is the duty of the elected representatives to impel the government to take timely decisions at least with regards to basic amenities and when the roads are threatening lives, can't these MLAs get the workable repairs done on roads in their areas by spending out of their CDFs?" he questioned.
Sources in the meanwhile disclose that there is more behind the dilapidated roads than what meets the eye. An officer of the R&B pleading anonymity told that the Jammuites have been forced to commute on such dangerously dilapidated roads because of lack of a mix of a conspiracy and lack of accountability in the department. "Former Chief Engineer R&B had floated a tender for the revamp of city roads wherein it was specified that the contractor who wins the contract shall be responsible for the upkeep of the roads for three succeeding years" he disclosed. "Such a condition would have hurt the vested interests and deep rooted commission culture in the department and hence a conspiracy was hatched to defeat the peoples' friendly initiative of the former Chief Engineer" he added. "Not only was the CE concerned elbowed out to relegation, the work was stopped allegedly at the behest of the Minister" he added further.
Sources also disclose that the hot mix plants in the state are owned by affluent politicians who were responsible for using poor quality bitumen in the relaying of roads, and such an initiative of maintenance of roads for three succeeding years would have hurt their interests. Hence the decisions to stop the work and then early onset of monsoon in Jammu caused double damage to the roads which were already demanding SOS repairs and as a result people were forced to commute on such dilapidated roads.
At a time when over three lakh pilgrims of Shri Amarnathji came to Jammu from all across the country, Jammu has been projected in poor light due to total indifference of the government and more specifically the BJP.
