Early Times Report

Srinagar, Nov 21: After announcing mass promotion to students for classes other than those appearing in the ongoing board exams, the government has issued date-sheet for students of class 11th, triggering widespread chaos and confusion in Kashmir.
A week after the government announced mass promotion, the students who have been promoted to class 12th woke up to read notification of the Jammu and Kashmir State Board of School Education (JKBOSE) that they will have to appear for first term of the class 11th exams, which were underway in July when massive agitation erupted in the wake of killing of Hizb terrorist Burhan Muzaffar Wani and his two colleagues. The exams were postponed midway that time.
Now after announcing mass promotion, JKBOSE woke up to hold exams. "Remaining papers of Higher Secondary Examination Part I (class 11th) Term 1st and 2nd (session June 2016) to be held in the respective recognized higher secondary schools of Kashmir province under continuous and comprehensive evaluation scheme (excluding district Kargil)," reads a notification issued by Joint Secretary Examination Kashmir division. The exams which are scheduled to commence on December 6 would conclude on December 10.
But the JKBOSE has come up with the announcement when many of the students have left Kashmir for winters. "We had been waiting for the government decision on exams. Once the mass promotion was formally announced, we left for Mumbai, to spend winters at my aunt's place away from violence. Now how can we suddenly come back to appear in exams which were not supposed to be held, this is ridiculous," said a student of class 11th.
A delegation of students and parents who today visited Press Enclave here said the government has made a mockery of the education system. "This education department has turned ridiculous and is playing with the career of our children," the parents said.
When contacted a senior official in the JKBOSE acknowledged that the students have been put to "undue trouble" by the government. "Basically the mass promotions were announced hurriedly on the instructions of a minister. But as an afterthought it was decided to hold the exams for the pending session which is obviously illogical," said the official asking not to be named.
He however pleaded inability to solve the confusion. "JKBOSE cannot help it out, if the students or the parents have any issues they should contact the minister concerned," the official told Early Times. Despite repeated attempts the minister was not available for comments.
Meanwhile the aggrieved students and their parents have appealed Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to personally look into the matter.
