| On hind side of Kanpur railway tragedy, security concerns of Jammu railway station haunt again | | | Abodh Sharma

JAMMU, Nov 21: Death of over 130 people in a gory rail accident near Kanpur the previous day has shaken the conscious of entire nation and has once again brought to the fore the pathetic state of affairs with regards to passenger safety and security in the Indian railways while as the nation is nurturing ambitions of running bullet trains.
While an inquiry has been ordered to probe the reason behind the Kanpur tragedy, Jammu railway station is an example of indecisiveness, complacency and criminal neglect of the railway authorities, who have not woken up to the vital measures suggested by a high level committee after the last terror attack on Jammu railway station. The vulnerability of the Jammu railway station from the security point of view is an open secret just as the completely open southern access to the railway station that leaves it totally exposed and susceptible. It is laughable that the authorities have installed x- ray machines and deployed police pickets at all entry points on the front access to the Railway station, it has remained completely exposed and unguarded from the rear side, leaving the entire security bandobast futile.
Besides the security vulnerability, the Jammu railway station continues to face the prolonged apathetical attitude of the railway and authorities of civil administrations who have chosen to sleep over its development. Despite a PIL filed by a noted citizens' group of Jammu seeking to make Jammu Railway Station a model railway station in view of its importance of being busiest railway station in this part of the country, this vital railway station remains vulnerable and devoid of modern amenities for close to one crore railway passengers who come here every year. Additional platforms, better and spacious waiting rooms, better security arrangement, elevators, shopping mall etc. at Jammu railway station are long pending demands of the organizations associated with tourism trade and people of Jammu in general.
It is pertinent to mention here that an ambitious plan had been made by the railway authorities to develop Jammu railway station on modern lines, but inability of the higher authorities to take decisions is delaying the project. Further, since Jammu railway station still falls under Ferozepur division, all administrative decisions with regards to this all important station have to wait for the nod of authorities at Division Headquarters. The demand of the people of Jammu to carve out a separate railway division in Jammu especially in view of the fact that rail services have now been extended to the valley, is also long pending with the union government. |
