Early Times Report

Srinagar, Nov 28: The authorities here are in a fix over whether to cancel the winter vacations in Kashmir Valley or to announce it at the onset of winter after five months of turmoil took toll all across the region. The double speak of the state authorities is confusing both children as well as the parents with questions being raised about facilities available at schools to brave the chilling cold during the harsh winter period.
The people at the helm in state's education ministry too haven't elucidated over the schedule for winter for the school going kids. As the education minister is yet to spill out the the government decision, the director education has issued a confusing statement- saying, "For now we will try to keep the schools open at least until the end of December for all classes or till the weather allows us." Such a statement besides revealing government's ambiguous stand on such a crucial issue has perturbed one and all in the state. Parents while raising questions about the availability of facilities for the little kids in the government run schools during winter months have said in unison that the state authorities were ought to prepare schools to make them winter resistant and able for conduction of the routine classes. "The fact is there are no heaters and no system in place that could ensure little kids do not suffer during winters in schools. Also the government is yet to make it clear whether it would go with no winter break at all or would announce it anytime soon," says Showkat Ahmad, a parent based in Srinagar. He says he wants to take his kid to Jammu for the better coaching facilities but the confusion prevailing over winter break is making everyone including him worry. On the other hand, the government is yet to decide about the fate of those students whose schools have been burnt by the arsonists during the recent past. Sources within the state's education department reveal that there has been no decision taken vis-a-vis those students who have their schools burnt. "It is yet to be decided in which school in the vicinity would they be relocated. The meeting in this regard is yet to be conducted and the government soon would take a decision to address the plight of the students whose schools were reduced to rubble," an official said while pleading for anonymity. Moreover, the official website of the state education department is yet to inform parents and kids about whether there would be any winter break or not. The website http://www.jkeducation.gov.in/ has orders uploaded about the Self-attestation of documents for admissions and fee waiver for the girl students. There isn't any order related to the extension of winter classes in Kashmir.
Expressing anguish over the confusion prevailing in Valley, parents said after exam schedule, the education ministry has come up with the new mantra of perturbing the student fraternity. "The government should come clear about whether it would announce the winter break or would cancel it. There is nothing that the government should hide- it should for student's sake avoid playing politics over education," a group of parents said.
