Early Times Report

Jammu, Nov 28: In a bid to enhance its reach and penetration for effective policing, Udhampur police have plucked a leaf from the history and given mounted police a chance in the district, which has a large part of it topographically difficult and inaccessible.
Mounted police have its trail into the British rule when police were mounted for effective mob control. However, many states retained the mounted police and still have well defined battalions of trained horses and men. Besides state police forces, central police organizations including BSF and CRPF also have sections mounted on horses and camels for effective surveillance and policing. Uttrakhand, MP, UP, Karnataka are some of the states wherein police have mounted battalions.
As an experiment, a squad of Udhampur police shall now be mounted on horses while patrolling in the town and its peripheries. 17 horses have been inducted in this squad which works in rotation of five on patrol at a time. The novel initiative has generated lot of excitement among the locals in Udhampur, who have welcomed the move. Ajay Gupta, a local said, "it is good to see policemen mounted on horses, the move shall definitely discourage the snatchers, burglars and petty criminals who indulged in hit and run crimes".
Talking to Early Times, SSP Udhamnpur Shailendra Mishra said, "we contemplated this initiative to meet multiple objectives. The mounted policemen shall be able to reach the areas which have no or poor road connectivity, it shall improve the visibility of the Police on patrol duty either way- the police shall have better vision and people in need can locate policeman on patrol from a distance. Further, horses also act as deterrents especially in situations where police have to deal with unruly mob". "The maiden squad of the mounted police was commissioned on the 17th of this month and the response in the last eleven days had been very encouraging both from within the people and also rank and file of the police", the SSP added.
It is an irony that while maintenance of law and order is the primary objective of the state police, the prolonged insurgency in the state of Jammu and Kashmir has made J&K Police more of a counter terror combat force due to which not much innovation has been done in regular policing in J&K.
