Soibugh witnesses violence at end of polling | Youth pelt stones on SF, polling staff | | Shakeel A Khan BUDGAM, Apr 30: The situation in Soibugh village of this Central Kashmir district turned violent as a group of people pelted stones on security forces and polling staff that was leaving in the evening after poll duties. In the evening the situation took an ugly turn when at the end of polling when the staff and the security posted on election duty came under heavy stone pelting while leaving the area. The youth appeared somewhere from the Beigh Mohalla near the Jamia Masjid and resorted to heavy stone pelting on the security personnel and polling officials. Security personnel came out of their vehicles and retaliated to the action carried out by the youth against them. Both the sides got engaged in pitched battles with these continuing for some time. Security personnel fired some tear smoke shells towards the stone pelting youth in order to bring the situation under control. This development delayed the departure of the people concerned with the election duty towards their respective destinations. As such the day was marked not only by poll boycott but by the violence as well. Security personnel arrested two youth from the Beigh Mohalla only to be released later on. During the entire day the Soibugh village along with the adjacent villages wore a ghost look with people preferring to stay indoors. The election process did not gather momentum as the day progressed causing fear psychosis among the people. The youth pelted stones on the polling booths intermittently forcing the security personnel on the polling duty to chase the stone pelting youth down the lanes. This violence continued throughout the day with poll boycott being observed in this area. Hardly few people turned up at polling stations to cast their votes in majority of the Soibugh and adjacent villages. |
