Azad adding to the woes of Omar
NC in serious trouble
6/25/2014 11:31:42 PM
Rustam
JAMMU, June 25: The ruling NC, which suffered the worst ever defeat in the just held Lok Sabha election and secured a paltry 8 to 10 per cent of the total votes polled, is in serious trouble. It has become unpopular and lost people's confidence and there should be no doubt about it. There is also no doubt that it is struggling for survival - a goal that appears not achievable. The reason is that it has no leader who could inspire people. Farooq Abdullah perhaps was the only leader capable of striking chord with his communal constituency, but he was also rejected outrightly by the Kashmiri Muslims. His was an ignominious defeat that established once and for all that he is a spent bullet and that he has lost his charisma. As for omar Abdullah less said the better. Suffice to say that he is sitting on the ruins of the NC.
But the unpopularity of the NC is not the only problem that has added to the woes of the Abdullah family. It is its ally, the Congress party, that is further adding to its woes by making statements against the NC-led Government of which the Congress is an integral part. Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad in particular has been making highly critical observations on the working style of the Omar Abdullah-led coalition Government. He has been saying that many initiatives taken during his tenure are yet to see the light of the day. On Tuesday, he lambasted the Omar Abdullah Government, saying that "around nine years back, his Government had made around 5,000 adhoc Rehbar-e-Ziraat appointments" and regretted that "they are still awaiting regularization" and that "an eight-year-old scheme for employment of the Jammu youth is awaiting policy change". He made these critical statements in public while talking to reporters in Srinagar.
Azad not only trained his guns at Omar Abdullah for his utter failure to generate employment opportunities and refashion employment policy. He also took to task Omar Abdullah-led Government for not implementing the Food Security Bill that was passed by the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre. "We had told Ministers in Jammu and Kashmir about the scheme. Seventy per cent of the states have implemented it, but Jammu and Kashmir has not implemented it. It will benefit 80 per cent of the population of the state," he said, and added that the Jammu and Kashmir Government has also failed to implement Land Acquisition Bill.
It was not the PDP that lambasted Omar Abdullah's Government. It was Azad who denounced it and accused it of not doing anything on employment front as well as other crucial fronts. When an ally attacks its own ally, it matters; it makes a difference and influence public opinion to a considerable extent. It is obvious that the stand of Azad on the functioning of Omar Abdullah Government would further mar the NC's electoral chances. At the same time, however, it can be said that Azad is not objective - not objective because the Congress is part of the Government. He cannot put the entire responsibility on Omar Abdullah and his NC. The Congress is equally responsible for the miseries of the people. It would have been better had he also took the Congress Ministers to task for not playing pro-active role in the Cabinet meetings or for dancing to the tunes of Omar Abdullah to remain in the good books of Omar Abdullah and promote their own vested interests.
