Defeating essence of equality, Jammu's Royalty still obsessed with titles

JAMMU, Sept 2: Over six and a half decades after monarchy was abolished in India, a member of the family that once ruled the state is finding it hard to do away with the titles which designate the royalty status, violating the spirit and essence of equality guaranteed by the constitution to the citizens of India.
Even as Dr. Karan Singh, the son of Maharaja Hari Singh, the last ruler of the state has refrained from using any such titles after his father affected the accession of the state to the Union of India in 1948, his son Ajat Shatru Singh, a National Conference MLC has not been able to win over the temptation of using the prefix 'MK' (Maharaj Kumar). "It is strange that when there is no Maharaja, how could there be a Maharaj Kumar?" questioned a cityite while taking a stroll in the park developed near Tawi bridge where Ajat Shatru's name has been engraved beneath the statue of his grandfather, along with the title.
Using such prefixes is against the Fundamental Right to Equality granted to every citizen of the country by the Constitution, as it sets one apart from the rest, suggesting an element of superiority and inequality. "There are so many prominent descendants of once royal families of the country in public and political life at present, but none of them uses royalty titles anymore," said Vinod Nagpal, a social activist sighting examples of Late Madhav Rao Sindhia and his son Jyotiraditya Sindhia.
It is pertinent to mention here that Right to Equality as guaranteed by the Constitution of India also calls for abolition of all titles. The very first of the six fundamental rights envisaged in the constitution reads, "Right to equality, including equality before law, prohibition of discrimination on grounds of religion, race, caste, gender or place of birth, and equality of opportunity in matters of employment, abolition of untouchability and abolition of titles".
