Party convention ends in fiasco; Nasir kicks NC worker, Jabbar's supporters raise anti-party slogans | NC faces rebellion in Ganderbal | | Fazal Khan Ganderbal, Sept 2: Ganderbal, which till the recent past, was considered as the citadel of the ruling National Conference is fast slipping out of the hands of the party. A convention organized by the ruling party at Beehama here today ended up in a fiasco as National Conference workers raised slogans against each other and tried to exchange blows. Chaos and confusion infuriated the National Conference Provincial President for Kashmir region and Chief Minister's close aide Nasir Aslam Wani, who lost his cool and kicked a NC worker to give vent to his ire. Sources told Early Times that many supporters of the Sheikh Ishfaq Jabbar assembled at the venue this afternoon with an "intention" that they would drive home a point that Ishfaq should be given the mandate for the forthcoming Assembly elections from Ganderbal. As the convention started, scores of supporters of Sheikh Ishfaq Jabbar stood up and raised slogans against the party leadership. "Party wants to sideline Ishfaq. We want mandate for our leader. When he joined NC he was promised the mandate. Now NC leadership is backtracking from its commitment," supporters of Ishfaq said. However, they were countered by other group of the party who raised slogans against Sheikh Ishfaq and suggested to party leaders that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah should contest from Ganderbal. Supporters of Ishfaq retorted, "If mandate is not given to Ishfaq NC will taste defeat in Ganderbal." Both the groups tried to clash with each other but the timely intervention of some party leaders defused the situation. Following which the senior NC leader and Rural Development Minister Ali Mohammad Sagar addressed the convention. Soon after Sagar finished his speech both the groups once again started raising slogans against each other. The NC Provincial President Nasir Aslam Wani lost his cool and came down from the stage and kicked a party worker repeatedly. The senior NC leader losing his cool infuriated the party workers and many of them left the venue amid anti-NC sloganeering. The NC workers while talking to Early Times expressed dismay over Wani losing his cool. "He (Wani) should have not behaved like this," they said. "It seems NC leaders have learnt nothing from recent defeat in Parliamentary elections." Pertinently, Ishfaq Jabbar while talking to Early Times last month had said: "My supporters want me to contest the forthcoming elections from Ganderbal and they are already making the preparations for it." He had said that if Omar decides to contest from Ganderbal he would have to ask his supporters whether to support Omar or not. A senior NC leader said, "Infighting and indecisive approach of the National Conference has brought the party on the crossroads. If party leadership fails to change its attitude many NC workers will be forced to change their loyalties." Pertinently, in April this year, Minister for Higher Education Mohammad Akbar Lone in presence of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had humiliated a youth when he tried to draw the attention of Chief Minister towards his problem during an election rally in north Kashmir's Baramulla district. |
