Mufti to take over as CM on Feb 15 | Modi likely to attend swearing in ceremony | | Bashir Assad Early Times Report Srinagar, Feb 3: The deal has finally been struck between the Peoples Democratic Party and BharatiyaJanata Party - the two biggest parties in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly - for government formation in the state. Highly placed sources privy to the development told Early Times that the next government will assume office on February 15 and the Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to attend the swearing in ceremony. Sources said, since it will be for the first time that BJP will share power in Jammu and Kashmir, BJP is keen on Modi attending the swearing in ceremony. They said that Mufti Mohammad Sayeed will be the first to take oath as the new Chief Minister of the Jammu and Kashmir followed by Professor Nirmal Singh of BJP as his deputy. Sources said that the deal has finally been struck and all the issues have been sorted out. He said that the Common Minimum Program awaits formal signatures from the leaders of the two parties. They said a formal meeting between PDP Patron Mufti Mohammad Sayed and Prime Minister Modi cannot be ruled out before the announcement is officially announced. However, it was not immediately known whether Mufti is going to take over as CM for full term. But BJP sources told ET that Mufti will take over as chief minister for the first three years. Sources further averred that there is a commitment on repealing the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and non-negotiability of Article 370. Earlier the PDP and BJP had hinted that they could soon announce the formation of a coalition government in J&K as senior leaders of the two parties held a meeting here. "Now, I think we might not have to wait for long," PDP spokesman NayeemAkhtar had said when asked about the update on government formation efforts. "The structured dialogue on CMP has progressed well, we look forward for government formation on 15th of this month" sources privy to the developments said. In the polls to the 87-member assembly, whose results came on December 23 last, PDP emerged as the single-largest party with 28 seats while BJP came second with 25 seats. The state is currently under governor's rule. Sources said the Raj Bhavan will be informed shortly jointly by PDP and BJP and the preparations for swearing in ceremony will take off accordingly. |
