Early Times Report
KUPWARA, Mar 23: The tall claims of the successive governments regarding health care may be theoretically sound but in practicality they are in shambles, as common masses of rural areas here in Kupwara district of north Kashmir suffer badly due to infrastructure and other facilities.According to sources, "In the rural areas where the major chunk of population lives, the main source of health care is the government health centers that include PHCs and sub-centers, traditional healers, quacks and the private practitioners have ruined the system. Dozens of rural areas in Karnah thesil of Kupwara district including Gasla, Gomal, Gundi Sayedan, Hajinar, Hindwal, Gund Gojran, and Hajitrah is lacking of proper health care facilities, as there is only one Community Health Centre from the last two decades due to which patients suffers a lot. Nazir Ahmad Khan of Karnah told Early Times that, the public health care system in rural areas is in shambles. Extreme inequalities and disparities persist in terms of access to health care. This large disparity across the district places the burden on the poor, especially women, scheduled tribes and Gujjars. "Not only this during the past six years, hundreds of expecting mothers and other serious patients died on way to Srinagar hospitals after being referred from Tangdhar and Kupwara Sub district Hospitals for blood transfusion and specialized treatment, Said Khan. Early Times have learnt that the availability of government doctors and paramedical staff in rural health institutions is very much regressive. There is an acute manpower shortage in the health institutions not only in Kupwara district but across the north Kashmir, which needs to be addresses at the earliest. A group of locals maintained that in theory medical officers are required to be present at the time of practice but many medical officers visit the PHC and SDH infrequently, and prefer to operate parallel private practices from their residences/ clinics in Kupwara district and other towns of the valley. While as the quality of government services in the rural areas has deteriorated to a great extent making these health centres dysfunctional due to lack of medicines and medical staff, locals added. However a senior medical official from Kupwara on anonymity conditions told early times that, I admit there is a shortage of doctors due to which the doctors are unable to do justice with the increasing number of patients in community Health Centers, Primary Health Centers in Kupwara district. But at the same time local inhabitants should make a representation to the Minister of Health and medical education Lal Singh to depute more medicos in the rural areas so that people will not suffer at large, said the official. |
