| Fair sex pins hope on Mufti Govt, wants representation in vital sectors | | NC-Cong regime failed to empower women | | Fazal Khan

srinagar, Mar 23: Erstwhile National Conference-Congress regime couldn't do much to give representation to women in the major institutions of the state, as the former chief minister Omar Abdullah had no time for the issues which could have helped the cause of Jammu and Kashmir.
With the formation of new PDP-BJP government in the state women are hoping that they would get due representation and the new dispensation would work towards giving women a chance to prove themselves.
Recently cabinet recommended the panel for the Public Service Commission (PSC) but only one woman was included in it as its member. Similarly there are only two nominated women members in the Legislative Council, but women are hoping that new government would reverse the trend and would give woman a chance to be a part and parcel of the important institutions of the state.
A group of women activists while talking to Early Times said, "The State Women Commission (SWC) which deals with the rights of women and other issues is virtually defunct. We hope new government would select its new chairperson on merit rather than political considerations."
The previous regime, they said, had politicized the SWC due to which many cases are pending there.
"The PDP President Mehbooba Mufti is herself a woman and we hope she would play her role in ensuring that women get the due representation," they said.
There are many boards and bodies in the state in which women have not been given any representation. "We are hopeful that the new dispensation would not follow the footsteps of the ousted NC-Cong regime and would ensure that women get their due share," said an analyst.
He was of the opinion that former chief minister Omar Abdullah ignored vital institutions, boards and bodies due to his "over busy" schedule. "Had Omar regime worked on the important aspects of the governance most institutions would not have been in ruins today. Unfortunately the former CM used to remain busy with twitter and raking controversies," the analyst added.
He said the previous regime did a big disservice to state of Jammu and Kashmir by "rendering important institutions defunct." "Women representation is a vital aspect but the previous regime ignored it completely," he added.
Sources within the government told Early Times that new regime is finding it hard to clear the mess which has been left over by the previous regime. "It's unfortunate that people at the helm from 2008 to 2014 paid no heed towards ensuring that women get a chance to prove their mettle. The previous regime reemployed only those people who enjoyed political patronage and had connections," they said.
Sources said that Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has asked all his ministers to ensure that women are given equal representation in all the boards and the bodies. "The Chief Minister is very keen on ensuring that the boards and the bodies which were rendered defunct due to one or other reason during the erstwhile regime should be rejuvenated without any delay," they added.
Sources revealed that infighting between the Congress and National Conference was one of the main reasons for boards and bodies turning defunct and women not finding any representation. "It's unfortunate that both the parties wanted to score points over each other and in the process state suffered immense damage," they added. |
