| Top Army commander reviews security situation in J&K | | |
Jammu: A top Army commander on Monday reviewed security situation in Samba-Kathua sector of Jammu and Kashmir in the wake of twin terror attacks in the region.
Western Command Chief Lt Gen KJ Singh rushed to the sector and also held a meeting over post-terror attack security setup in Army units.
"Gen Singh arrived in Samba Army formation today. He held meeting over the post terror attack security setup in Army units in the sector close to International Border," a secuity official said today.
He met troops and complimented them for the clean operation in which two militants were killed.
Confirming the meeting, Defense spokesman Lt Col Manish Mehta said that Gen Singh has complimented the troops for the operation and patted them in bid to raise their morale.
Gen Singh got briefing from the commanders about the reports that one militant had escaped from the encounter.
"He has come himself to get briefing from top officers over the issue," they said.
During the encounter, a militant was in contact with his masters across the border through his communication set. But after the encounter ended, neither any communition set was recovered nor the militant was found.
Earlier, Gen Singh had visited Samba, Kathua and Jammu districts during his two-day visit from March 17.
The army has advised the state governments of Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir to shift a large part of the vehicular traffic from strategic Udhampur-Pathankot highway to the Dhar Udhampur road.
"In view of the heavy traffic rush on the existing highway, it has remained easy target of terrorists from across the border.
"The army is of the view that Punjanb and Jammu and Kashmir governments must shift a large chunk of the traffic to the Dhar-Udhampur road," a defense source said.
He said that the army is of the view that if it was not
possible to shift the entire traffic to the alternate road, still the vehicles bound for Srinagar could be shifted to the Dhar-Udhampur road.
"It would not only reduce the burden on this highway but would lessen the security burden for the pilgrims to the Amarnath shrine and Mata Vaisho Devi Shrine," he said.
Sources said that the state governments have also been advised to wave-off toll tax on the alternate road for some time, so that drivers are attracted to ply on the Dhar Udhampur road.
The army commander of Chandimadir-based Western Command of the army Lt Gen KJ Singh also visited Pathankot and Jammu and discussed the issue of the upgradation of the Dhar Udhampur road with the civil administration of the two states.
