NC-Congress coalition's failure to hold civic polls: J&K lost Central allocation worth Rs 170 cr | | | Kunal Shrivatsa Early Times Report Jammu, Mar 23: Indecisiveness of the previous National Conference-Congress regime has costed J&K nearly Rs 170 crores since the Union Government withheld the funds meant as assistance to the state for its failure to hold polls for the Urban Local Bodies within scheduled period of time. The details of the losses amounting to Rs 169.2895 crores due to the failure of the state to conduct Civic polls were divulged by the present government in the State Legislative Assembly today while giving a written reply to the question tabled by Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) MLA Sat Sharma. The state government while responding to BJP legislator's query informed, "The losses to the tune of Rs 169.2895 crores including General Basic Grant (GBG) of Rs 102.8160 crores and a General Performance Grant (GPG) of Rs 66.4715 crores sustained on account of withholding the Central Assistance to the State for not conducting the Local Bodies elections during the past four years." The comprehensive reply further revealed that in actual an amount of Rs 204.1880 crores including GBG of Rs 133.5060 crores and a GPG of Rs 70.6800 crores was awarded to the state government but the state government received only Rs 34.8985 crores including Rs 30.6900 crores as GBG and Rs 4.2085 crores as GPG. It may be recalled that the last elections for the Urban Local Bodies in the state were held in the year 2005 and even as the expiry of the terms of different civic institutions four years ago the previous government failed to conduct the polls. However, the government in its reply emanated some positive signals of conducting the civic bodies' polls very soon in near future. "The government is contemplating to conduct the Municipal elections and the issue is under submission with the General Administration Department (Cabinet Section)," the reply maintained. |
