Mufti promises curbs on drug-trafficking | Question Hour in LC | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Mar 23: Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed today expressed dismay over increase in the menace of drug trafficking across Jammu and Kashmir. He said that stringent measures would be taken to curb this menace of drug trafficking. Mufti said this while intervening during a question which Minister for Health Choudhary Lal Singh was replying in the legislative council today. "Drug trafficking is a serious issue since it involves our younger generation. I will ask Choudhary Lal Singh to ensure that drugs which could lead to addiction are not sold in the market without the prescription of registered doctors. Some measures have to be taken to prevent misuse of certain drugs which may be life saving but could lead to addiction if not kept under close watch," said the Chief Minister. Besides keeping a close watch on the chemists, Mufti Mohammed Sayeed said that drug trafficking both within the state and from across the international border as well as line of control (LOC) has to be checked vigorously. He added that drug addiction has become a challenge over the last ten years for the state government. "Efforts have to be made on war-footing basis to prevent its spread to the far-flung areas of the state," said the Chief Minister. Earlier, replying to the question raised by Yasir Reshi, Minister for Health and Medical Education Lal Singh said that the government has adopted a policy to control drug trafficking, broadly based on promotion of use of Narcotic and Psychotropic substances for medical and scientific purposes, while preventing their diversion from illicit sources and prohibiting illicit traffic and abuse. Minister said that a state level apex committee under the Chairmanship of Chief Secretary has been constituted which holds regular meetings for prevention of cultivation/drug trafficking in the state. He said government has taken initiatives like establishment of drug addiction and treatment centres, strengthening regulatory mechanism of State Drug Control, preparation of Standard Treatment Plan (STP) based on treatment requirement of an addict, sensitization of consumer population and continuous monitoring mechanism in this regard has been evolved. Minister said that no person has been put behind the bars during the last 5 years for trafficking of drug formulations. He said 3 cases in Srinagar 1 each in Baramulla, Kupwara, Kulgam and Shopian and 3 cases of habit forming drug cases were registered. Ghulam Nabi Monga, Shehnaz Ganai, Qaisar Jamsheed, Sofi Yousuf, Sajjad Ahmed Kichloo, Haji Anayat Ali, Surinder Choudhary and Vibodh Gupta raised supplementary questions. |
