CUK to hold one-day workshop on CBCS on May 6

Srinagar, May 4 : Central University of Kashmir has initiated academic process to implement Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) that has the potential to enhance academic standards and quality of education including improvement and revision in curriculum, teaching-learning process, and examination and evaluation systems. After several brainstorming sessions with the Deans, Heads and faculty regarding the implementation of the Choice Based Credit System, Central University of Kashmir in collaboration with University Grants Commission (UGC) is organizing a one-day workshop on CBCS on May 6, 2015 from10.30 am at SKICC here.
The Vice Chancellor of Central University of Kashmir, Prof Mehraj Ud Din Mir, while opining about the utility of the CBCS termed it as a beginning of a new era of teaching and learning processes across the country. The credit based semester system provides flexibility in designing curriculum and assigning credits based on the course content and hours of teaching. The choice based credit system provides a 'cafeteria' type approach in which the students can take courses of their choice, learn at their own pace, undergo additional courses and acquire more than the required credits, and adopt an interdisciplinary approach to learning, opined the VC, CUK. The Central University has already initiated some forward movement in respect of the credit transfer policy with some of its sister universities at the state level. Prof. Mehraj udDin. "It is an opportunity for universities, colleges of J&K to share viewpoints on CBCS and come up with a common minimum program." said Prof N A Nadeem of CUK who is the organizing secretary of the event. In the seminar six universities are expected to make presentations on the topic. Besides, various representatives of Universities from J&K and outside, colleges are expected to participate in the event. Prof. Chahal, former Vice-Chancellor, MP University of Agricultural Sciences, a UGC Expert in the Field, shall make a detailed presentation on the CBCS during the workshop.
The CBCS enables the students to earn credits across departments and provides flexibility in duration to complete a Program of study. The CBCS facilitates transfer of credits earned in different Departments/Centers of other recognized / accredited universities or institutions of higher education in India and abroad. In this System student representatives take part in designing the curriculum for a program of Study and facilitate in running the academic programs.
