Early Times Report

JAMMU, May 4: Has Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed's Saturday statement that law will take its own course and action will be taken against those who violated the law of the land at Tral in Kashmir by raising pro-Pakistan slogans and hoisting Pakistani flags frightened Syed Ali Shah Geelani and his cohorts who held an anti-India and pro-Pakistan event in Tral on Friday?
It seems the statement of the Chief Minister, who is under tremendous pressure because of the national media, people of Jammu, parties like the Congress and the Shiv Sena and RSS affiliates like the VHP have upped their ante against Geelani and others and charged the government with going soft on separatists and Pakistani agents, has had some impact on those who enacted anti-India act under the nose of the law and order authorities.
How else would one describe the Sunday written statement of the Geelani's spokesperson Ayaz Akbar? On Sunday, he issued a statement which said that waving Pakistani flags did not constitute a criminal offence and termed Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed's statement about taking action over the incident as his "sheer frustration". This was not important. What was striking was the explanation he gave. His explanation: "We make it clear that we only wave flags of our amalgam but some enthusiastic youth wave Pakistani flags as well, which is nothing new. The 'Crescent and Star' is common in the Pakistani flag as well as that of Hurriyat Conference which 'is a mere coincidence' as these symbols have long been associated with Islam," ," he said while referring to the incident that took place during an anti-India public meeting of Syed Ali Shah Geelani on April 15.
It is clear from the explanation that Geelani & Co has gone somewhat defensive fearing state action. It is important to note that the state government had also acted against Masarat Alam on April 17 and slapped Public Safety Act (PSA) under pressure.
