Early Times Report

Rajouri, May 4 : Historical Mughal road which was reopened for traffic on Sunday was again closed immediately after few minutes as the snow sliding took place following clearing of road with huge walls of snow on both side of the road.
On Sunday only three small vehicles could go to Kashmir valley via the historic road and it was again closed due to land sliding at Shikargah about 17 kilometers from Bafiliaz(Poonch) side, said SHO , Surankot police station , Mousuf Mirza.
MH Mirza, XEn, Mughal road said that snow clearing machines were pressed into service from Bafliaz side(Poonch) and from Shopian (Kashmir) side to clear the snow to make the road operational. "It was thrown open for traffic at about 4 pm today and about 180 stranded vehicles were allowed to move to Kashmir Valley. Traffic will be allowed from Kashmir to Jammu side on Tuesday and the road will remain open between 9 am to 4pm daily till all widening work ( snow clearing) is completed," said MH Mirza, Executive Engineer. He added road clearing work has been completed and about 6 machines will be deployed for the widening of track. Mirza added that about 30-40 feet snow is still at Nalana top near Peer-ki-Gali the highest point on this road about 14000 feet above sea level.Mughal road was used by Emperor Akbar to conquer Kashmir in 1586 and about 429 years ago this road was abuzz with traffic of caravans of Mughal Emperors and their armies to keep control on Kashmir Valley . This historical Mughal road begins from Jhelam Town in Punjab Province , now in Pakistan, and after touching Kotli (now in POK) it enters India in Nowshera tehsil and after passing through Chingus, Rajouri, Thanamandi, Bafilaz, Chandimarh it enters Kashmir Valley at Peer-ki-Gali and then reach Shopian via Heerpora. As the Mughal road is not opened for traffic officially but being a shortest route to reach Kashmir , inhabitants of Rajouri and Poonch district use this road. "It takes only 4-6 hours to reach Kashmir from Poonch and Rajouri district while it takes about 15-18 hours while traveling on Jammu-Srinagar highway," said Avinash , a tourist operator. The road has still many historical monuments like Noori Chamb, Thanamandi fort, rest house at Aliabad, shrine at Peer-ki-Gali , Chingus fort where Emperor Jehangir had died on way to Lahore and his intestines were buried here.
