On condition of anonymity, a telecom operator of Airtel told Early Times "I had started a telecommunication business at main Chowk of Sopore in 2009 but till yesterday I was not worried as I was doing a good business and customers used to come here for recharging their mobile phones and now suddenly I feel I must wind up." A number of unemployed youths had gone in for the telecommunication business and hired shops and commercial spaces , But yesterday's attack on BSNL employees has put them in a state of melancholy and they find no option except to wind up their businesses, he said. Sources further said that many telecom operators across north Kashmir feel unsafe due to lack of security and according to them telecom operators are ready to shut down their business rather than being harassed or threatened in future. While it is also true that, the pre-paid subscribers have been facing tremendous problem in the town as they don't get recharge from anywhere. About 95 percent people in the town are pre-paid subscribers. Meanwhile Early Times have learnt from sources that many telecom service providers in Sopore town removed the advertisement boards from their shops, as Lashkar-e Islam outfit has threatened the people associated with telecom business to stop recharging mobiles and wind-up the business. It is pertinent to mention here that on May 25, one person died while two others were injured after unidentified gunmen opened fire at a BSNL outlet in Sopore town. However a senior police official said that, there is no police record of militant outfit like Lashkar-e-Islam, and the communication towers and other infrastructures are working properly in and around north Kashmir. Official said that the trouble started when a high tech communication device installed by militants to avoid their detection by Security Agencies on the top of a mobile tower went missing. When asked about the security measures for these telecom operators, official said that there we are trying to ascertain the facts if there was any sort of personal rivalry or something else, which cannot be ruled out at the moment, official added. |
