Omar's latest salvo on Afzal Guroo fails to impress people | Aimed at drawing political mileage | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, May 26: National Conference working President and former chief minister, Omar Abdullah is trying his utmost best to remain in news and gain public sympathy at the same time. Omar fired a latest salvo in this regard while referring to the execution of parliament attack convict, Mohammad Afzal Guroo. The former CM said that Guroo was hanged by then United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the centre for the political reasons. He remained mum during the past two years over the issue and chose this moment of time to express his displeasure over the execution of parliament attack convict. Omar has no sympathy whatsoever with Guroo and his family. His statement is purely political in nature and he wants to draw political mileage out of the same. The former CM wants to gain sympathy from the people of Kashmir while talking about Guroo and his execution that took place on February 9, 2013. Had Omar been really concerned over the execution of parliament attack convict he would raised a 'revolt' at the time of the execution, but that was not to be. There were people who thought that Omar would resign as the chief minister following the execution of Guroo. However, as Omar decided not to demit his office these people got dejected and believed that Omar can go to any extent in retaining his chair. Some of the people believe that Omar's decision of not resigning from his position following the execution of parliament attack convict turned out to be one of the reasons for his party's debacle in the 2014 parliamentary and assembly elections. National Conference finished at 15 seats in the assembly elections while as the party could not win any seat in the Lok Sabha elections. During his tenure Omar could not stop the killing of 120 persons mostly youth at the hands of security forces personnel during the street protests of 2010 summer agitation. No FIR was registered and the victim families continue to run from pillar to post while seeking justice from the different quarters. The latest salvo fired by the former chief minister has failed to impress the people. Common masses are not ready to buy the statement of Omar that Guroo was executed for political reasons by then UPA government. The people have become matured enough to distinguish between good and bad and it was due to this reason that National Conference was virtually snubbed during the last year's Lok Sabha and assembly elections. Ever since the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) government has assumed office in the state, the National Conference leaders have been issuing statements which they should not have. In order to cover for the 'follies' committed during their tenure of the government the NC leaders are trying their best to shift the blame on PDP and BJP. |
