JK Govt flooded with confusion over flood threat | Threat's evident: MoS for I&FC; there's no threat: Education Minister | | Javaid Naikoo Early Times Report Srinagar, June 25: The looming flood threat in the Valley after heavy downpour has confused the PDP government as different ministers today issued contradictory statements about the emerging situation. Education Minister Syed Naeem Akhtar Andrabi while downplaying the flood threat said, "There is no flood threat as rain has stopped and there is only problem of inundation which the government is assessing." But Andrabi's colleague and Minister of State for Irrigation and Flood Control, Abdul Majeed Padder said, "Nobody is downplaying flood threat when everything is evident." "Flood threat cannot be ruled out," Padder told Early Times. He said that floods have caused massive damage to crops, vegetables and orchards in three south districts of Kulgam, Anantnag and Pulwama. "Yes, flood threat cannot be ruled out as I know how much devastation has been caused so far and can cause further unless weather does not improve," Padder said. He said, "I can count you names of dozens villages in Kulgam and Anantnag where floods caused massive devastation. People are worried there. The administration is on toes and we are monitoring the situation." The MoS admitted that the government is yet to pay a penny to the people of south Kashmir who were hit by last year's massive floods. He however said that government will "definitely" compensate loss of farmers and orchardists. As per official figures around 38000 hectares of land was either completely washed away or damaged by last year's floods. Meanwhile, fearing floods people in Kulgam, Anantnag and Pulwama districts today came out of their homes in large numbers and erected barriers on the banks of Jhelum at many places to stop flood water from entering their fields and orchards. A flood alert was sounded by authorities on Wednesday night for Kulgam, Anantnag and Pulwama districts of South Kashmir. The MeT department has predicted more rains for over next 48 hours in Kashmir. |
